What our 2016-2017 homeschool year looks like

by beanie1

The reason I share what our year to year looks like is because I want other homeschool families to get a glimpse into what our day to day looks like in the trenches. Every year, month, and day look different. It requires having a mind set to be willing to change and evolve as our kids passions, interests and they way they learn changes.

Back to school

Some years we have homeschooled throughout the whole year, while other years we have taken the summer off or chosen to take a longer winter break and make up for it during the summer. Our schedule allows us to continue to get in the schooling our kids need, while allowing for breaks when it is best for our family.

This year we have homeschooled throughout the whole year. We were making great progress with Maddie in math and spelling and we really needed to keep the momentum going. I have also sat down with Maddie to explain what we need to do and where she needs to be now to keep her on track through high school. I know, it was crazy, talking with my nine and half year old about looking long term down the road. While it was weird, it was also a great conversation to help her see where she is going and how she can get there.

This last spring Maddie came to me and said she was ready to really get a handle on her spelling. I told her MathUSee, the math program we use, also has a spelling curriculum and she excitedly said, “let’s try that one”. I agreed with her. It was funny, I was expecting them to moan and groan when their books finally came in. However, all three excitedly said mom, can we start today. We’ll we didn’t start that day, but we did start a week or two after we received them.

Join us over the next few weeks as I explore what curriculum we are using and why we have chosen what we have. It’s going to be another great year of learning!

We love Math-U-See also! I wondered about their spelling program, but I already bought all the levels of All About Spelling, and it does work well for us (new just always seems better though).
My oldest uses Teaching Textbooks primarily, but we added MUS 1 day a week for extra practice. It has been so good for her. Good for you for identifying where your children need to be and helping them achieve that goal. Keep up the good work, momma!

Quincey, I am so glad you have found what works for you. When a curriculum works and we are doing well academically is a great feeling. Have a great school year!
