Maddie has been waiting and waiting for the movie Frozen to come out on Dvd, she has been just giddy with excitement. As we were walking through Wal-Mart yesterday we remembered that it was the release date of the new movie. We had already discussed with Maddie that she could buy it, but it had to be with her own money. She happily agreed and we walked out with her movie in hand.
I am a fan of the princess movies, I love Belle in Beauty and the Beast, I love her beautiful yellow gown, I love how she is able to melt a beasts heart and find love. I love Cinderella and her fight to get to her glass slipper. I love Brave and the story of a mother and daughter learning to appreciate each others differences and beginning to see each other in a new light. I appreciate the princess in Frozen who did not give up on her sister.
I have started thinking about what these movies are teaching my kid’s and thinking about what discussions I can have with my kid’s about these movies. In a way Belle and the Beast rescued each other, the Prince rescued Cinderella, Elsa and Anna rescue each other. I have been thinking what this will teach my kiddo’s about who will rescue them. I could go all christian crazy and ban my kid’s from watching such movies because it will give them a wrong image of who should rescue them. But, I personally think that is a bit jumping off the deep end. Because, in my mind God often uses his people, me and you, to help rescue. Solider’s go on rescue missions, paramedics help the sick and injured, friend’s help watch each other’s kiddo’s. God does use other people in our lives as a tool to “rescue” us.
What is important is to teach my kid’s that while God uses humans to rescue me, they are still just that, human. Teaching them that even humans with the best of intentions will hurt us, I’m not saying this because I want to be a Debbie downer, I’m saying this because it’s true. I need to teach my kid’s that while God uses soldier’s, paramedics, firemen, policemen, mommies, daddy’s, and other humans to rescue us, it is God who does heart rescuing, it is God who is our Prince of peace, our comfort, our shelter, and our healer. It is God who controls the weather and heals our bodies, it is God who heals my heart and calms my mind. It is important to teach my kiddo’s that when they call on the name of the Lord, he will rescue them! He may send a solider, he may send mommy, but he may also send his peace to calm them in the storm. When they call on the name of the Lord, it is the Lord who will be their help!
To look to man to be my rescuer is only going to create heartache, loneliness, and I will only continue seeking more and more to be filled up. Human involvement without the active abiding relationship with Jesus the savior will end in confusing emptiness. We cannot take out human interaction, it’s important, God does definitely use it to minister to each other. But, I must abide in the Savior, I must seek the one who sends the rescue, who sends the help, who is my help and my comfort! It is Jesus who rescues me from eternal separation from my heavenly father, there is no prince on earth who can accomplish that for me, only the Prince of peace has that power and authority and his name is Jesus!
We will continue watching Cinderella be rescued by her prince, we will watch Anna be saved by her sister Elsa, but we will also remember that there is one even greater who saves the souls of man, his name is Messiah, Prince of peace, Yeshua, Jesus the son of God.
I pray you will allow yourself to be rescued by Jesus, the Prince of peace! Shalom!
