Exodus 15:22-25. Then Moses led the people of Israel away from the Red Sea, and they moved out into the desert of Shur. They traveled into this desert for three days without finding any water. When they came to the oasis of Marah, the water was too bitter to drink. So they called the place Marah (which means “bitter”). Then the people complained and turned against Moses. “What are we going to drink?” they demanded. So Moses cried out to the Lord for help, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water and this made the water good to drink.
I have read about the Israelites many times and of course, I have heard it in Sunday school. Every time I’ve always thought it was so dumb that they were always complaining, I mean God just parted a whole sea for them! And! God turned the waters of Marah sweet and good to drink, but they just went back to complaining saying things like did God bring us out here to die? I’ve never understood why they were like this, until now.
Me and my family have found ourselves in a hard place, and before the hard things hit, things were good, not perfect but good.
A couple of years ago my family was praying for some things, and at this time things were hard and we were at rock bottom, but God answered those prayers and things changed a lot! But again my family finds ourselves in a weird place, and I haven’t been able to help but think, God why did you give me these things to take it all away, my soul wants to know why God. and in this, I stopped and thought oh! I’m just like the Israelites, could it be that they remembered all that God did but they were crying out in despair asking God if he wanted them to die, maybe they were saying, God if you are so good why did you bring us to this place.
The rest of Exodus 15:25-27 says. It was there at Marah that the Lord set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him. He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.’’
I want to point out two things, one is that God says that if you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God, Sometimes we get so stuck in our complaining that we miss God’s voice, we miss him saying I have a reason for why you are here, the Israelites did not know this then but we would use what they went through in almost every Sunday sermon and Bible study that’s out there! God has a reason for what we go through!
Two God says he is our healer and He heals us! he won’t just leave you broken and afraid! He’s got your back!!
I also want to say that God is ok that I am not ok, and He’s ok that you are not ok, what God was telling the Israelites is that I will help you, but you need to listen, God gives us the freedom to do what we want to do with what he says, so what He was saying is that you need to choose to listen, and choose to put your best foot forward and keep going, you won’t have to do it by yourself because He says I go with you, and we see this throughout the Bible, and in our own lives that God is with his people.
So Yes I can say that In my asking God why I’m still sad and confused about what God is doing, and honestly, I’m a little mad at God, but I still trust and love God, and know that whatever it is that God is going to do with my life and my family’s life it will all be for his glory!
This very insightful, Naomi. I can be just like the Israelites by complaining about my situation. You remind me to listen to God. When I do, I can be grateful where He has placed me. If I am not, grateful and still complaining, He is not worried. He will turn my heart to His as I listen again. Thanks for the reminders.
I’m glad you got something from it!!
