Russell’s Adventures recently went on an incredible field trip and family get away. We loaded up the van with snacks, snow clothes, kids, and we were ready to head out to the Ice Castles in Eden Prairie, MN.
Growing up in Minnesota I (Robin) had always heard about the Ice Castles, but was unable to attend for one reason or another. This was the year and I was not disappointed! We arrived around 3pm and were excited to find out we were among the first to arrive. After our long drive we made a quick stop at the port-a-potties they had set up for Ice Castle goers. Afterwards we head back to the van to get their snow clothes on!
If you plan on visiting the Ice Castles and I highly recommend you do. Be sure to bring snow clothes and an extra set of clothes! We had brought snow clothes, but after hours of playing in the slushy snow their clothes were soon wet under their snow clothes.
We try to take a picture in front of the events or places we are visiting. This trip was no exception! We checked in at the ticket booth and were set to enter the castle. The ladies in the ticket booth were friendly and excited at our arrival. They informed us the Ice Castle was slushy due to the warm temperatures and offered us tickets for another day. We thanked them for their consideration, but told them we would rather enjoy the warmer day with slush.
Our kids were beyond excited as we walked up to the Ice Castle entrance. We walked through the entrance and our kids were in love! There was tunnels everywhere and slides made of ice! Honestly, the dripping ice icicles made it even more adventurous for Titus who was continually trying to figure out the science behind the melting icicles. He was struggling to understand how they could melt from the tip up. We learned it is because of the way they make the ice castles. The ice forming the castle turns into more of a glacier ice rather than the icicles that form and hang off of our roof.
After exploring tunnel after tunnel and sledding we decided to share a cup of hot chocolate and a cup of apple cider. I was impressed when the gals behind the counter asked me if we would like it at drinking temperatures! It was awesome to see this forethought into our arrival with young kids who would want to be warmed up, but would not enjoy burning their tongues. Thank you for thinking of my kids tongues!
After warming up with our cups of deliciousness, we were back to exploring more tunnels and we soon found our way back to the ice slides.
It was truly an awesome Minnesota Family Fun Adventure! An adventure we look forward to enjoying next year! Our only change will be going later in the evening when it gets dark. Lights are turned on that make the experience even more magical! Next year our kids will be older and it will be more enjoyable to do so.
We are already excited to extend the invitation to our family and friends to join us next year! A great adventure for the whole family!
